Windows 11 is updated again, with many different new features and improvements for all users: what changes for the operating system.

In recent years we have seen how Windows also usually releases updates for its operating system, always launching new functions capable of satisfying users. However, updates can sometimes also take place to make corrections. In fact, Microsoft’s operating system could sometimes launch problematic updates, with flaws that can only be fixed by some patches.

The latest update concerns Moment 4 within Windows 11 23H2, users can benefit from significant improvements in archive management. This update introduces support for several compressed formats, giving users the ability to create TAR and 7zip archives directly from the context menu. There are several innovations introduced and some of these are currently available in the Canary channel, reserved for members of the Insider program.

The most recent innovation introduced by Windows 11 appears in build 26040. The first noteworthy feature is certainly the “Additional options” item in the context menu, reachable with a right mouse click on the file of interest. This option opens a wizard that allows users to further customize compressed memory creation settings.

As if that wasn’t enough, subsequently through two drop-down menus they can also specify the desired format (7zip, TAR or ZIP) and the preferred compression method. Available methods include Store (no compression), Deflate, BZip2, Xz, Gzip, Zstandard, LZMA1, and LZMA2.

Another customizable element is the compression element managed via a slider that varies from 0 to 9. This scale allows users to balance the speed of archive creation with the space occupied on the device, offering greater control over the experience of compression.

While the last two options have particular importance. These allow you to preserve symbolic links and hard links during the compression process. These terms are familiar to users of the Linux operating system, with Microsoft renewing its desire to offer advanced and comprehensive support for users who are unfamiliar with the operating system.

Furthermore, today it must be underlined that the creation of compressed archives is currently limited to open source formats, such as 7zip and TAR, while the proprietary RAR format is supported only for opening. Microsoft has adopted the libarchive library, opening up the possibility of adding additional formats in the future, which could include XAR, LHA and LZH. This indicates an ongoing commitment to improving and expanding storage management features in Windows 11.
