Do you want a high-end video card that doesn’t cost an absurd amount? Here is the GPU to buy without thinking twice.

At CES 2024 NVIDIA presented an update of the 4000 series models with. These new models will replace the models currently on the market, and offer phenomenal performance at lower prices than previous models.

Specifically, the GPU that caught everyone’s attention is the RTX 4070 SUPER, which went far beyond expectations. According to the technical specifications revealed by NVIDIA, the 4070 SUPER will have an AD104 chip with 7168 CUDA cores. In the Founders version the card will work at 1980 MHz base and 2475 MHz boost. With 12GB of GDDR6X at 21 Gbps, from a purely technical point of view the SUPER is placed immediately below the 4070 Ti, superior only at the CUDA level.

Nvidia recommends a 650w power supply for the card’s 220w power consumption. Compared to the standard 4070 there is a 22% increase in CUDA core level. So who is the new SUPER aimed at? Those who already have a high-end RTX 4000 won’t need to upgrade, but those who are still on 2000 or 3000 and want, among other things, access to DLSS 3 can access a high-end modern 4000 at a relatively affordable price .

The GPU to buy today: all the details on the RTX 4070 SUPER

In fact, we are talking about 679 euros, VAT included. Let’s remember that the original 4070 Ti cost 919 euros, and today it cannot be found for less than 850 euros. So let’s see how the new SUPER behaves in terms of performance. Tested on an adequately powerful machine, the benchmarks show that without ray tracing and various DLSS the 4070 SUPER manages to tackle modern games at 1440p (or even 4K) at high details without difficulty, with a speed increase compared to the 4070 of 10-15 % (the 4070 Ti remains ahead by 7-8%).

The card therefore represents a perfect choice for those who want similar performance to the 4070 Ti without spending a fortune, even surpassing the RTX 3090 in some scenarios. Among the rivals we see AMD’s RX 7800 XT very close in the benchmarks, with the SUPER maintaining a slight advantage.

As for ray tracing, depending on the game you may need to rely on DLSS for good performance. Speaking of DLSS, titles that have already implemented DLSS 3 show impressive performance improvements, compared to AMD’s FSR 3 which is not yet widespread.

In terms of consumption, however, in idle the 4070 SUPER stops at 11w, while when testing Hitman 3 at 1440p and maximum details it reaches a peak of 230w. Here too, DLSS 3 helps a lot, thanks to Frame Generation which reduces consumption. The temperature, however, remains at 67 °C, which drops to 63 with the use of DLSS 3. The card also turns out to be not very noisy, even under load.

The RTX 4070 SUPER is, in short, a replacement for the 4070 Ti in all respects. Although technically worse, the price difference of almost 300 euros makes the difference in performance practically irrelevant. The RX 7800 XT from AMD has even lower prices (around 600 euros), but cannot keep up with the 4070 SUPER, especially in terms of more advanced technologies such as ray tracing and DLSS. In short, a perfect choice for those who need to upgrade.
