Celebrating the Giants in Downtown San Jose
By Fernando Perez
For the rest of my life, I will remember the day the Giants won the World Series. I had been listening to the game at work and in my car because the best sportscasters are on KNBR 680AM. When Edgar Renteria hit his spectacular three run homer I honked and yelled at some people in a parking lot, “Go Giaaaaants!” They yelled back and applauded. I watched the very last pitch of the game at a pizza spot in downtown San Jose, I made it there just in time to meet up with my girlfriend.
As I stood there holding my girlfriend’s hand I paused and looked around noticing all the orange and black shirts and jerseys awaiting the inevitable. At that same moment Giants fans across the globe watched the infamous Giants closer Brian Wilson throw his last strike of the season helping the San Francisco Giants beat the Texas Rangers and win the World Series four games to one. The restaurant erupted in cheers and high fives, and an invitation from the bartender for free shots.
A couple buddies were at a bar down the street, we decided to walk over and meet them so we could watch the awards ceremony. There were small celebrations happening on different parts of the strip, cars honking in the streets, cheers from inside other bars and restaurants, high fives to strangers on the street. For a Monday night, the streets looked calm, but I bet there were a lot of folks watching the game at home celebrating.
This is a historic moment for many true die hard Giants fans. One of the many highlights of my night was when my dad called me to share his happiness, it must be really nice to see your favorite team win once in your lifetime. There are many folks that don’t get to see that happen. My dad taught me about baseball, he taught me how to throw and catch a ball. I remember going to games and taking my glove expecting to catch a foul ball, one time my dad caught one. I have good memories of games at Candlestick Park, and now new ones at Pac Bell where the Giants moved.
I have been following the Giants for 28 years and it feels great to have your team win the World Series. Twice before I saw the Giants go to the World Series and lose and this third time they won. I remember the Battle of the Bay in 1989 facing the A’s and the huge earthquake, and the bad luck against the Angels in 2002, but this year the Giants made history. The San Francisco Giants won their first ever World Series Trophy since moving to the west coast from New York in the fifties. This is an enormous triumph for the bay area and baseball fans everywhere.
