Dolores Huerta Meets With Community About Immigration at SJSU
Dolores Huerta visited San Jose State University to talk to students and the community about the current immigration issues, accompanied by Maldef's president and members of Ozomatli.
Huerta recognized the students whose activism nearly made the Dream Act pass recently, and the panel spoke about SB 1070, eliminating citizenship rights for sons and daughters of undocumented immigrants, and the importance that music and art has always had in every civil rights issue, alongside with student activism.
Huerta also reminded us about what has led many to migrate north in the first place, such as NAFTA, the free trade agreement. Two effects of NAFTA on immigration are how American subsidized corn that displaced 8 million farm workers in Mexico, and how the small community grocery stores around Mexico compete with Walmart.
